Three of my peers and I conducted a site visit to The Discovery Center today, as part of our Grant writing Humanics class project. The site visit is an important part of the grant writing process. It is our opportunity to find out more information about the center and help them begin to address their needs. Also it allow us to explain the assessment process better to the board members and management and get a better understanding of the state of the museum.

We’ve met Mr Gary Pigg the Interim Director and Mrs Lory Hunter the vice president. Started with a brief presentation by Gary, questions and answers, and a discussion of the proposal review process. He talked about this local interactive center and how it has been a part of Fresno for many years. Gary talked about how much work it is to maintain the park and how he genuinely invested in keeping the park free as well as providing a positive service to his community.

He took us in a small tour around the place which was so refreshing. There were ponds with turtles, a pen with a tortoise, aquariums with fish, and terrariums with exotic reptiles. The Deutsch Cactus Garden was my favorite bit of the park. There’s so many cacti, it actually feels like you’re out in a desert! There were many fun, interactive and mind boggling activities to explore for kids of all ages.

Looking forward for our next meeting in 2 weeks, now our real work has begun!
